The theme for my miniseries of works is Repetition in Nature. I am very passionate about nature and wanted to incorporate the beauty of it in my work. Just doing Nature as my topic would have been pretty difficult because the topic is so broad. In order to not totally abandon the topic of nature and still show the beauty of it, I just changed it to Repetition in Nature. We have so many places in this world that show the beauty of nature, but they are rapidly being destroyed. People are taking these places and their resources for advantage and leaving nothing. We can find beauty in so many things in this world, but we are losing so much of that beauty when we destroy nature. I drew these pieces in hopes of reminding people of the beauty in this world and to inspire them to do what they can to stop the destruction. I worked on three pieces: a beehive, a leaf, and roots of a plant. These are just a few of many things that show reoccurrence in nature.
I chose to use pen as my media because I love the contrast of just black pen on white paper. I tried it for the first time in a previous project and really enjoyed it so I decided to use it again. Another thing I find really interesting is when works of art look, for lack of a better word, somewhat messy. The way you can see so many lines all drawn separately to create a thicker line just gives a piece much more depth and more to look at. Using pen allowed me to do these things and helped me show some skills I have gained this past semester. I have always wanted to be able to draw realistically, but have always had trouble and never had the patience for it. This class helped me realize that I do not need to draw like that; that I can just draw the messy way I like. So that’s what I did. One of the elements I used was line. It doesn’t look like scribbles, there is some structure to it, and that’s what I was going for. Another element I used was color. Most of each piece was just black and white, but I added some water color paint in a few spots. Some of the principles I used were balance and pattern. I tried to make sure that one side of the picture didn’t look heavier than the others. I also used a lot of pattern in my three pieces. In the piece with the bees I showed a lot of pattern and repetition by drawing all the hexagons to create the beehive. For the leaf I showed pattern and repetition by showing all the details and veins in the leaf. In the last piece I created I showed pattern through all the roots. I exaggerated the amount of roots of a plant to show the repetition of it. I really enjoyed working on these pieces. Usually I lose my motivation and get bored after working on a project for a bit, but with these, that didn’t happen. And I think it’s because I finally found a media I enjoy using.
