This was the last full week of high school for me. I worked on quite a bit this week. I finished working on my part of the installation piece by attaching the man I made to the parachute I also made. The man looked dead when I attached him so we bent up his arms, and that seemed to give him a little more life. We ended up hanging the parachutes from the main staircase in the courtyard. This week I also finished working on my globe. I cut some skinny pieces of wood and painted them black to be buildings. I then glued them onto the earth to show that industry takes over the planet and that helps lead to the destruction and decay of earth. Through this piece I really wanted to show that earth is in the process of being destroyed because of humans and all they do. I painted the water to look gross and dirty, and I painted the land to look dry and barren.
This week I continued working on the installation piece by making a person out of wire. It was much harder than I had thought and I ended up with a lot of cuts on my fingers. After that I attached the person to the parachute, and again, that was harder than I had thought because the string kept getting tangled. All the parachutes hanging together will look pretty amazing. I also finished painting my globe. I made the land look more barren and dirty and also started making some buildings to show that industry has taken over and has been part of the destruction of the earth.
There was a lot going on this week. I finished working on the bowls for the empty bowl project. I submitted five of them all together, two of them were made out of tissue paper and the other three were made out of clay. Only two of the clay bowls are food safe. The one that was not food safe was painted with acrylic paint. It looks really cool because it's mostly pink but has some red, blue, and purple in it. The other two I glazed and absolutely fell in love with the blue one. I just loved the texture and the bursts of color on it. Another thing I worked on this week was my globe. I paper mached it and built up the mountains a little more because it was a little hard to see them. The next thing I did was start painting it. I wasn't too happy with how the project was going, but once I started painting it, I started liking it again.
This week I mostly worked on making a few bowls for the Empty Bowl Project. I trimmed the bowl I had made the previous week on the wheel. This was pretty difficult and I was afraid I was going to mess it up like I did the last one so I didn't do too much altering. The pinch pot I had made last week was ready to be painted so I did that as well. I really like how that came out. The texture is just what I was going for and the color with the speckles in it makes it look even more interesting. The third bowl I worked on this week was made out of tissue paper. All I did was glue torn up pieces of paper onto a Styrofoam bowl and took the paper off once it dried. I used three different shades of green so I was very happy with the colors and look of the bowl. This week I also finished my sgraffito plate. We dipped the plate in glaze and fired it. I think it turned out really cool. The last thing I did this week was start paper mache-ing my globe. I realized that this may not have been the best idea because now I can't really tell where the continents were and which ones they are.
This week I finished carving the globe and started to add mountains. I used plaster to create these mountain ranges and next week I plan to cover the rest of it with paper mache. Another assignment I worked on this week was making some bowls for the Empty Bowl Project. The first bowl I made was a pinch pot. I really enjoyed making this one because it was a little calming. I made the second bowl on the wheel. I was pretty happy with it until I tried taking it off the wheel, and I messed it up by cutting the bowl off unevenly. I tried fixing it when I trimmed it, but that wasn't going to well so I just started over and made a whole new bowl
This week I worked on the globe again. I finally gave in and just sketched the continents without a guide. Most of it looks pretty good, but North America is a little small and there's not much of Canada. Once I finally finished that I started carving out the ocean and giving it some more texture. Next week I plan on adding stuff to the land to raise it up a bit. The other thing I did was finish working on my sgraffito plate by adding more details, and going over the first coat of underglaze with another one to make it darker.
This was our first week of the new semester and I spent it trying to figure out a good way to accurately draw the continents on a styrofoam ball. I am going to show the destruction and decay of the world on globe. At first we thought I would be able to project part of a map onto the ball and trace it, but the image wouldn't wrap around the ball like we thought it would. I looked up some other ways to make the globe and am hoping that one of the techniques I saw would work. The other thing I did this week was make a plate and do sgraffito. I really enjoyed making this and can't wait to see how it turns out.
