Pit Firing: technique where pottery, firewood, newspaper, and chemicals are put into an empty pit to fire works of art. It is the oldest known method of firing pottery.
Foil Saggar: a boxlike container used in the firing of pottery to enclose or protect ware in kilns. They are usually made out of clay, but they can also be made out of foil or paper.
For my foil saggar/pit firing piece, I made a mold of something to make a little container. I was originally going to use the pottery wheel, but I didn't make anything very good the first few times I went on it. After the piece was fired the first time, my teacher put a chemical on it to give it more color once it was fired. I then wrapped the piece in tin foil with leaves, twigs, and some copper to add color.
I was really excited for this project because I thought the concept was amazing. But I was really disappointed when I got my piece back. There wasn't much color change, and nothing really happened to it at all. Maybe I didn't put enough flammable materials inside the tin foil, or maybe the tin foil just came off. I still think pit firing and foil saggars are really cool, so I would like to try another one and hope that one comes out better.
